Welcome to Delaware County Historical Society (DCHS).

For 129 years, DCHS has served as the stewards of local Delaware County history and culture. Our job is to protect the collection, make it accessible to all, and to continue collecting pieces that reflect the diverse and unique history of Delaware County.

DCHS is a place that is open and accessible to all. DCHS has open hours to view displays from Tuesday through Thursday, 10 AM to 3 PM. Guests are welcome to knock on the door or ring the doorbell, and someone will allow you in to view the collection and displays.

For research requests, please use the research tab above to fill out a research request form. Please give DCHS at least 48 hours head notice for an appointment, and please follow the prompts in our research tab.

The work DCHS does, is only made possible with thanks to our members and supporters!

Due to the heat, History Under the Stars this week will be moved indoors at our Research Center and Library in Media. We will begin promptly at 8 pm.

Our next lecture will feature Dr. Kirsten Lee, of Auburn University for her presentation, “The Ganges of Delco: On Being Black and Free” This talk focuses on the 135 Black survivors of the Phebe and Prudence, two slave ships captured off the coast of Cuba and brought to Philadelphia 1800 to emancipate the humans on board. The presentation tracks the survivors as they began their free lives in Philadelphia and the surrounding counties with support from the Pennsylvania Abolition Society, as well as their enduring connections to each other across nineteenth-century Southeast PA such as their surname Ganges. Looking closely at the lives of Ganges survivors who made homes in Delaware, Chester, and Philadelphia Counties after being treated at a quarantine hospital in Essington, the lecture examines Delco’s status as a site of free Black people’s history critical to telling fuller stories about early Black life in Southeast PA. Please join us!

Wednesday, June 25th at 8 pm.
